“Ryo Shimamoto is a musical marvel! Ingenious, innovative and inspirational! My group, Seattle Kokon Taiko, will most often play his signature piece, Yui, as our performance closing song for good reason. It is the embodiment of Ryo’s great creative genius with its tightly knit rhythms, high energy and opportunities to connect to each other as well as our audience. His teaching style is highly detailed yet patient and encouraging, both in taiko and on kane. If you ever have a chance to see or are fortunate enough to learn his original Shimamoto style of playing kane, it will blow your mind and change the way you play atarigane, forever! As Naruto would say, “Believe It!” -Lika

Ryo sensei is the best kept secret as a taiko instructor! Our group relearned the super fun and energetic song "Yui" from Ryo sensei last year (we first learned it 10 years ago from his students). The amount of details and nuisances we got from class was unparalleled! In addition, we were also treated with Shimamoto Chanchiki playing style that looks out of the world when Ryo sensei plays it fluidly in high speed. We really enjoy Ryo sensei's overall encouraging and upbeat teaching style.
Slowly but surely under his guidance, we are able to pick up a little bit of taiko and Chanchiki magic along the way. It's been a fascinating process! - Marinda |
